How our device
determines age
Our device can use ultrasound in a quick examination that is non-invasive and harmless to health to determine whether girls and boys are minors. As minors grow, there are growth plates in the bones of the forearm.
Ultrasound is normally reflected by bone, but it passes through the growth plates and can be measured again on the other side of the forearm.
These growth plates close in girls and boys at around the age of 18 and are therefore a good indicator of legal adulthood.
If the person is a minor, a red light lights up; if they are of legal age, a green light lights up. If this does not match the information in the passport, the person can initially be taken into security custody for traveling with false documents. In this way, the minor is protected for the time being and the travel route organized by a human trafficker is interrupted.
The decisive advantage: fast, simple, safe
Until now, there has been no precise determination of age other than X-raying the wrist bones and then comparing them with images of adults.
This is a procedure that must be approved by a judge. Therefore, if there is suspicion of traveling with a passport containing false age information, an official appointment must first be arranged. For practical and time-related reasons, this is often not possible.
This is where the hand scanner provides a fast and straightforward solution.
For this reason, no authorization from an official authority is required to carry out an examination with the hand scanner. It can be performed reliably without medical expertise on the part of the inspecting person.
